SECURING THE AI FACTORY OF THE FUTURE BEGINS WITH RISK MANAGEMENT TODAY

Power, AI, and Security

Getting to the finish line first, whether you are talking about Le Mans, Daytona, Silverstone, or any of the other racetracks throughout the world, requires a number of components to work perfectly in sync.听 There鈥檚 suspension configurations, tire compounds, appropriate skill sets of both the driver and the supporting crew 鈥 and power.听 The amount of power that a vehicle can make proper use of directly dictates how well that vehicle can perform in competition.

What does this have to do with artificial intelligence and security?

Plenty, so let鈥檚 dig into that. One of the biggest messages that resonated with me during Jensen Huang鈥檚 keynote at NVIDIA GTC came about 100 minutes in: how power will play a significant role for organizations in adopting artificial intelligence and subsequent revenue generation.

Consider that every component within a modern data center and the AI factory of the future requires power. The basics, such as compute, storage, and networking, are certainly the first to come to mind.听听

But physical security systems, access controls, lighting, and even cooling require power as well 鈥 whether your infrastructure uses traditional cooling systems or liquid cooling optimized for the heat generated by infrastructure optimized for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (HPC).听

Beyond cybersecurity, security for the future of AI is going to revolve around power.

Risk Management and Power

Recall that the foundational tenets of information security include confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Ensuring an adequate, clean supply of electrical power supports two of those tenets directly: availability and integrity.听 Availability is logical, as in, no power means that the system will not be available.听 Integrity is a bit more nuanced, and based on the idea that a lack of appropriate power or cooling could alter the performance of a highly optimized AI system, leading to adverse effects such as system instability or improper outputs.

So, it follows that organizations such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have taken steps to secure their supply of power.听Additionally, other organizations such as Rolls Royce, BWX Technologies, and TerraPower are leading the way in designing Small Modular Reactors (SMR), and even smaller technologies, as an answer to the additional power needs of AI.听

Looking at it from another perspective, the AI factory of the future is the culmination of numerous supply chains and the aggregation of third-party risk. Those who win in the AI race will be the organizations who have baked security into the hardware, software, power, cooling, and talent supplies that their AI systems are built around.听
